When & where?

SCHEDULE HERE

How the session will go…

Each student will sign up for a 30-minute session (that they will arrive 10 minutes early for!) which will flow through three different stations, where we will create three different kinds of portraits.

You will share a time slot with up to 2 other students, and your portraits will be taken Round Robin style, so all three of you will be having your photos taken at the same time, at each station, switching every 10 minutes. Part of that time will be used for you to change between stations as-needed. There will be one photographer and one assistant at each station. You will have the opportunity to review images as we go; the goal is to get images you love.

We’re going for quality over quantity.

You don’t take a photograph. You make it.
— Ansel Adams

The three types of photographs we’ll be making:

1. The Formal Photo

This is the traditional headshot that will go in your graduation program, as well as framed alongside the last 29 CSN graduating classes. Congrats on being #30!

2. The Cap & Gown Photo

This is a classic 3/4 body portrait that will show most of the cap & gown (no shoes), and will be displayed in your yearbook.

3. The Personality Photo

This one’s all about you. Here, we’ll get a series of full body and closer-up images. You’ll choose some of your favorite things to bring with you to be photographed with. Have fun with it!

“so, what do I wear?”

Arguably the most important question! Each portrait has a different answer, and some of what you’ll wear will be provided by us.

Read on for the scoop:

The FORMAL Photo

Ladies

Provided by us: a black “drape” that sits just below the shoulders. we will have one-size-fits-all drapes.

Please wear: a strapless shirt since your shoulders will be showing. Any pants you want are fine, as they won’t be in the photo.

Note: avoid getting tan lines before your session!

Gents

Provided by us: a white tuxedo bib (half-shirt that is velcro’d on for easy, quick wear), a black bowtie, and a black tuxedo jacket. We will have sizes M through XXL tuxedo bibs & tuxedo jackets available.

Please wear: a white undershirt. Any pants you want are fine, as they won’t be in the photo.

Note: avoid getting tan lines before your session!

The CAP & GOWN Photo

Ladies

Provided by us: a blue cap & gown

Please wear: a shirt that sits 2” below your collarbones, so there is no shirt visible under the v-neck cut of the gown. Any pants you want are fine, as they won’t be in the photo.

Gents

Provided by us: a blue cap & gown

Please wear: a white collared dress shirt with a tie of your choice

The PERSONALITY Photo

Anything for this portrait will be provided by you! You may bring one outfit and something(s) that you feel most strongly represent your personality right now. Without overthinking it, consider what you love now that you’ll smile looking back on 10, 20, 50 years from now… Some examples/ideas:

  • An instrument you play

  • A ball/racket from a sport you play

  • Your favorite music album/shirt/poster

  • A pet (if you bring a pet, there must be somebody else with you to take care of them when not being photographed!)

  • A sibling

You may bring more than one of these things and we will do our best to get them all in; remember, you’ve got just 10 minutes

When choosing your outfit, please consider these tips:

  1. COLORS: Stay away from neon and primary colors; they’re too bright and tend to take away from the main focus of the photo: YOU! So, let’s take blue for example: when choosing a shirt with blue, go for baby or slate on the lighter side, or navy on the darker side… Not royal. With red: a lighter pink or a darker plum or maroon rather than fire engine red. Take note: dark purple tends to always photograph more red or blue; it’s just how the camera sensor processes the color, so it is likely to not appear “true” to what you see with your eye.

  2. PATTERNS: Patterns are OK, but can also be distracting, especially if very small. So, if you tend to like patterns like plaid, dots, or any repeating pattern, a good rule of thumb is that if it is smaller than a dime, it will look more distracting in camera. When working with stripes, the lighter and thinner, the better.

  3. KEEP IT SIMPLE: We all know what your favorite outfits are; rather than trying to think too outside the box, going with a favorite outfit is often a surefire way to make sure you feel comfortable and confident, and will therefore be happier with the outcome.

    4. FOOTWEAR: Shoes will be in some of these photos, so do choose intentionally!

Pre- Session General Tips & Info:

  • Avoid getting too much sun just before your session; sun burns and tan lines are not ideal, nor particularly easy (or impossible!) to fix after.

  • Above all, being comfortable is truly important. Make sure you feel good in what you’re wearing and that you can move easily.

  • All photos will be taken on a light gray backdrop, studio set up. The cap & gown photo will be put onto a Seahawk blue backdrop for the yearbook, and the other photos will stay with the neutral backdrop.

  • Parents are welcome to attend; that is up to you.

  • Please arrive 10 minutes before your session time for a quick orientation and to ensure you start on time.

Pretty please…

  • Arrive 10 minutes before your session time for a quick orientation and to ensure you start on time.

  • Do your hair and make-up prior to arrival; there will be minimal time between each session for minor touch-ups, but that’s it. We will provide small mirrors and single-use combs.

  • Label any clothing/props/water bottles that you bring with your name, in the case that it gets left behind we can get it back to you.

  • Bring any clothing you’re changing into on hangers so it doesn’t get wrinkled! Feel free to bring options if you’re torn between a few options; please don’t bring half your wardrobe. ;) But we will have an area for you to hang everything.
